NYC’s Most Comprehensive Treatment Center for Memory Disorders Opens at The Silberstein Institute
The Pearl Barlow Center for Memory Evaluation and Treatment has opened its doors to provide comprehensive diagnostic services and care to patients with memory problems and to their families. The Center—part of The Silberstein Institute of the Department of Psychiatry—encompasses best practices in medicine, psychiatry and neurology, including pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments. This interdisciplinary medical approach integrated with world class research capabilities is the most comprehensive and first of its kind in the treatment of memory disorders in New York City.
The Barlow Center addresses the needs of those suffering from memory disorders caused by neurological, psychological, and physical ailments as well as memory issues resulting from medication side effects, anxiety, depression and the effects of normal aging. Its focus is to treat memory changes which include mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and disease-related memory loss; to monitor and evaluate memory changes caused by normal aging; and to reduce risk factors for memory decline (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease).
As part of its overall approach to patient care, the Center integrates clinical expertise with support services directed to caregivers and families. Building on the strengths of the Silberstein Institute, the Barlow Center will serve as the principal coordinating hub for clinical care delivery for memory disorders at the NYU School of Medicine and will collaborate with other geriatric care facilities at NYU.
Said Ralph Nixon, M.D., Ph.D., Director, The Silberstein Institute, “Through our research we continue to develop new approaches to the prevention, cure and treatment of memory impairment. Today, in launching a formidable clinical capability we reaffirm our commitment to deterring and defeating diseases associated with memory decline.” The Silberstein Institute is devoted to the understanding, cure and prevention of aging-related cognitive decline through translational research and evidence-based geriatric care.
The Barlow Center is lead by Jeffrey Foster, M.D., Clinical Director and psychiatrist. On staff are neurologists James B. Golomb, M.D., Marcin Sadowski, M.D., and Thomas Wisniewski, M.D.; Associate Clinical Director/psychiatrist Alla Iospa, M.D.; Internist Jeffrey Michael, M.D., as well as a team of neuropsychologists, social workers, geriatric and family counselors.
In addition, the Barlow Center provides patients the opportunity to participate in research endeavors and clinical trials and will serve as a training facility for the next generation of geriatric psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and other healthcare professionals.
The Center is made possible through the generosity of the late Pearl S. Barlow. For more information, please call (212) 263-3210 or visit The Barlow Center.
