NYU Langone First Medical Center in New York Using New Surgical Robot For Complex Procedures

Offered Only at NYU Langone, New Da Vinci Xi System Provides Additional Option for Patients

August 11, 2014 (All day)

Surgeons in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center have performed the first minimally invasive robotic mitral valve repair using the new da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System. The new advanced technology for complex procedures has broader capabilities than prior generations of surgical robots and offers important advantages to the surgeon and patient.

Dr. Didier Loulmet, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon who helped develop robotic mitral valve repair surgery, performed the first procedure at NYU Langone using the Da Vinci Xi System. He notes, “We’re excited to be one of the first medical center’s to use this new technology, which represents a significant step forward in robotic surgery. As leaders in the field, we’re always looking for new ways to innovate and find solutions that allow us to simplify complex procedures, which results in better outcomes for patients.”

The da Vinci Xi System, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. offers additional benefits to previous generations of robots such as advanced 3-D, high-definition vision, expanded anatomical access to the patient and superior maneuverability of the robotic tool which is ideally suited for the delicate cutting and stitching required in these types of surgery. This results in less trauma for the patient, less blood loss and pain, smaller scars and faster recovery time.

“NYU Langone has one of the most advanced robotic surgery programs in the New York area and, combined with the skill of our surgeons and the breadth of the conditions we treat, we have pioneered more than a dozen innovations in robotic surgery,” said Michael Stifelman, MD, professor, Department of Urology and director of Robotic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. “By continuing to advance the field by using new, advanced technologies, we hope to keep moving the field forward by offering patients specialized procedures.”

Since July 8, NYU Langone has performed more than 20 successful surgeries using the Da Vinci Xi System across specialty areas including thoracic surgery, urology, colorectal surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. The use of the Xi System is currently being expanded to include additional specialties including gynecology.
