NYU Langone Medical Center Achieves Honor Roll Status in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-2013 “Best Hospitals” Ranking
NYU Langone Ranked #2 in New York State and New York Metro Area
Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation, and Geriatrics Ranked “Top 10” Nationwide
NYU Langone Medical Center is #11 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 – 2013 “Best Hospitals Honor Roll,” with 13 nationally ranked specialties, including top-ten rankings in Orthopaedics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation, Rheumatology and Geriatrics. Additionally, NYU Langone ranked #2 in New York State and once again ranked #2 in the New York metro area based on the number of its nationally recognized specialty areas. State rankings were introduced this year.
“This recognition acknowledges our faculty and staff as among the best not only in New York, but nationwide, for the exceptional services they provide,” said Robert I Grossman, MD, dean and CEO at NYU Langone Medical Center. “They are our most valuable resource, working tirelessly to deliver the highest level of patient care, and we commend them for their unwavering commitment to excellence.”
The Medical Center’s 13 nationally ranked specialty areas are: Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Urology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Ear, Nose & Throat, Cancer, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, and Nephrology. Obstetrics & Gynecology was also ranked as a “high-performing” specialty. For 23 consecutive years, NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation program has ranked in the “Top 10” nationwide and #1 in New York State.
This ranking is one of a growing number of accolades the Medical Center has recently received for its overall quality of care. Of note, NYU Langone was awarded a Gold Seal of Approval by The Joint Commission, reflecting a commitment to high quality care. Earlier this year, the Medical Center was one of only two hospitals in New York City to be awarded with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group for excellence in patient safety. Last year the Niagara Health Quality Coalition named NYU Langone to its “Honor Roll” for the third consecutive year and recognized the Medical Center on its list of “America’s Safest Hospitals.” NYU Langone continues to have the best score among New York City hospitals on four key measures of patient safety (hospital-acquired infections, readmissions, how well hospital staff communicates with patients about medications, and discharge planning), according to Consumer Report, and whynotthebest.org ranked NYU Langone first among the nation’s academic medical centers for both overall recommended care and surgical care.
For this year’s 23rd annual edition, U.S. News & World Report analyzed roughly 5,000 hospitals in 16 specialties on mortality rates, patient safety, and reputation. Fewer than 150 hospitals are nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The printed “Best Hospitals” issue will be available on newsstands the end of August, but can also be accessed on the U.S. News website at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals.
