NYU Langone Medical Center and its Cardiac & Vascular Institute has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Silver Performance Achievement Award by the American Heart Association. This recognition honors the Medical Center’s commitment to high-level, consistent care of its heart failure patients using the latest clinical and scientific, evidence-based guidelines supported by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology.

“This award recognizes NYU Langone’s leadership in the field of heart failure and its steadfast commitment to high-quality care of our patients with adherence to evidence based treatments,” said Stuart Katz, MD, director of the Heart Failure Program at NYU Langone. “NYU Langone’s high performance in the national Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program is a critical step forward toward the prevention of recurrent hospitalizations, improved quality of life and outcomes for our heart failure patients.”

NYU Langone has reached the aggressive goal set forth by the AHA’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program for treating heart failure patients. Over the last 12 months, NYU Langone has successfully reached at least 85 percent compliance with core standard levels of care and key achievement measures for the treatment of its heart failure patients.

Get With The Guidelines is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program for heart disease and stroke. It empowers healthcare teams to save lives and reduce healthcare costs by following the most up-to-date evidence-based guidelines and equipping hospital staff with tools to care for patients to prevent future hospitalizations.

The treatment guidelines for heart failure patients include aggressive risk-reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants in the hospital, alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling and referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged.

In May 2011, NYU Langone Medical Center was also recognized for its leadership in the treatment of stroke patients with the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award honors NYU Langone’s commitment and success in providing quality care for stroke patients by following the AHA’s treatment guidelines for key measures at least 85 percent of the time, maintaining this performance level for at least two consecutive twelve month intervals with an additional 75 percent or higher compliance with other specific quality measures for at least twelve consecutive months.
