NYU Menopause Expert Honored for Research in Hormone Therapy

September 29, 2008

New York, NY - Lila Nachtigall, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the Women's Wellness Program at NYU Langone Medical Center, was honored with the 2008 NAMS/Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. ET/EPT Research Award late Friday during The North American Menopause Society's Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.  This award was designed to recognize and acknowledge an individual whose body of research has advanced the understanding of the role of hormone therapy for perimenopausal or postmenopausal women.

"I have dedicated my career to researching hormone therapy in an effort to benefit and empower women during this phase in their life," said Dr. Nachtigall.  "I am honored that my peers have recognized my accomplishments in this pivotal area of women's health."

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Nachtigall has focused on evaluating whether estrogen therapy (ET) reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular complications in women; determining whether ET alone or estrogen progestogen therapy (EPT) reduces the incidence of osteoporosis-related fractures and hip fractures; and whether ET increases the risk of endometrial cancer and progestin and estrogen therapies increase breast cancer risk.  Dr. Nachtigall also is involved with studies evaluating the efficacy of transdermal versus oral estrogen.

"I am committed to educating women about advances that continue to be made in this area of medicine," said Dr. Nachtigall.  "Hormone therapy and newer low-dose, transdermal options, in particular, are valuable alternatives for certain women during this time."
